What Is Trap‑Neuter‑Return?

Trap‑Neuter‑Return (TNR) is the humane, effective approach to managing outdoor cat colonies . The process has three basic steps :

  1. Trap: Humanely trap all cats living in a colony using safe, humane traps.
  2. Neuter (or Spay): Transport the cats to a veterinarian or clinic to be sterilised, vaccinated, and ear‑tipped. Ear‑tipping is the removal of a small portion of the ear to identify cats who have been sterilised
  3. Return: After recovery, return the cats to the exact location where they were trapped so they can live out their lives.
TNR

TNR ensures no new kittens are born, stabilises cat populations, provides vaccines, and stops mating behaviours such as yowling, spraying, and fighting . It’s considered mainstream practice; major animal welfare organisations—including the ASPCA, Humane Society of the United States, American Animal Hospital Association, and National Animal Care and Control Association—support TNR as sound public policy .

Why TNR Matters

Many communities still rely on outdated catch‑and‑kill methods, leading to high euthanasia rates for feral cats. TNR is not only humane but also cost‑effective and sustainable. Sterilised cats live healthier lives; spayed females avoid uterine infections and breast cancer, while neutered males avoid testicular cancer and injuries from fighting . By ending the breeding cycle, TNR reduces nuisance behaviours, improves the cats’ health, and allows the colony to stabilise and eventually decline in size .

Community Support & Cat Caretakers

TNR isn’t a solo effort—it thrives on community involvement. A community cat caretaker manages one or more colonies by providing food, water, shelter, and ensuring cats are spayed/neutered and vaccinated . You can support caretakers by:

  • Assisting with feeding, trapping, and transporting cats to and from veterinary appointments .

  • Providing temporary housing for cats during recovery after surgery .

  • Fostering and socialising kittens so they can be adopted into homes .

  • Spreading awareness and connecting with local shelters or rescue groups to access TNR resources.

Ear‑tipped cats should never be removed from their colonies; they’re living healthy lives outdoors . Only friendly or socialised strays—cats who enjoy human interaction—are candidates for adoption.

Our TNR Program & Services

Hub Clinics is committed to humane cat population management and offers a full suite of services:

  • Humane trapping: We provide training, equipment, and guidance on safe trapping techniques.

  • Sterilisation & vaccination: All cats trapped through our program are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ear‑tipped by licensed veterinarians.

  • Recovery & return: Cats recuperate in a quiet, clean environment before being returned to their colony.

  • Health assessments: We conduct basic health checks and treat minor medical issues.

  • Kitten care: Orphaned or very young kittens are placed in foster care until they are old enough for adoption.

  • Caretaker support: We offer education on colony management, help with feeding stations, and assistance locating low‑cost clinics.

  • Equipment loans: Humane traps and recovery cages are available for community members participating in TNR.

  • Outreach & education: Our team hosts workshops and community meetings to promote TNR and responsible cat care.

Adoption Process for Friendly Cats & Kittens

While most community cats are happier outdoors, some strays and many kittens can thrive indoors. For these adoptable cats, Hub Clinics follows a careful adoption process to ensure lifelong matches:

  1. Application: Prospective adopters complete an application detailing their home environment and pet‑care experience .

  2. Meet & Greet: Once approved, adopters meet their potential pet and any family members interact with the cat to ensure compatibility . We may conduct a home visit to confirm the environment is safe and suitable.

  3. Adoption Agreement: If all parties agree, the adopter signs an adoption contract, pays a standard adoption fee, and takes their new family member home . This fee helps cover the cost of sterilisation, vaccinations, and microchipping.

  4. Post‑Adoption Support: We provide guidance on diet, behaviour, and veterinary care. Our team remains available for follow‑up questions and support.

Adopters should be prepared for the responsibilities of pet ownership, including time commitment, space for litter boxes and scratching posts, indoor living to ensure safety, and budgeting for long‑term care . Friendly cats may take some time to adjust; kittens often require socialisation and gradual introduction to new environments.

What We Offer to the Community

Hub Clinics goes beyond basic TNR by building a network of support:

  • Training & Resources: Free workshops on trapping techniques, colony management, and caring for community cats.

  • Volunteer Opportunities: Opportunities to volunteer as trappers, transporters, foster caretakers, or adoption counsellors.

  • Community Partnerships: Collaboration with local shelters, rescue groups, and municipal agencies to expand TNR efforts and adoption programs.

  • Educational Materials: Guides on humane cat management, ear‑tipping, and safely handling kittens and injured cats.

  • Adoption Events: Regular adoption events and promotions to find homes for socialised cats and kittens.

  • Ongoing Support: Continued assistance for caretakers and adopters to ensure long‑term success.

Through our TNR program and supportive services, Hub Clinics helps stabilize community cat populations, enhance the well‑being of outdoor cats, and connect friendly cats with loving indoor homes. We invite local residents to get involved—whether by becoming a colony caretaker, fostering kittens, volunteering for TNR efforts, or opening their hearts and homes to an adoptable cat.
